These guides assume you have played a MMO before, but no familiarity with DAoC at all. Each guide also includes links to additional useful resources that are still up-to-date with the current game.

Why this website?

When I recently started playing Dark Age of Camelot again, I found the game much improved from what I remembered from my last time there over a decade ago. Compared to when I previously played (first at launch in 2001, and a few more times in subsequent years) the game is far easier to get into. You can start a fresh character and hit level 50 in a matter of hours, less than 20 even if you take your time with side-quests. When you hit the level cap you'll also get a solid set of end-game starter gear for free.

I also found the game to be obscure, in some cases frustratingly so. A lot of nearly critical systems aren't documented, or in some cases even alluded to, in-game on a normal play through. In addition to this a good number of websites for the game are badly out of date and/ or or aren't very useful unless you already know a lot of of the game basics. On my first few characters, I spent almost as much time puzzling things out through web searches, trial and error as actually playing the game. To save you some of that suffering, and help you find the truly great game buried underneath a steep learning curve, I've put together guides to a few essentials.

PvE Leveling for New Players: The modern game does a good job of holding your hand with easy PvE quest chains that will get you to about level 35. However, after that the quest chains run out and the little guidance you are given in-game on where to go next isn't very helpful. This guide contains an easy PvE path from 35 to the cap, info on some optional but rewarding low level side-quests (as well as what side-quests to avoid), and some pointers on new advancement systems that open up at the level cap.

Champion Levels: A guide to champion levels, one of the quickest and easiest ways to get a modest power boost at level 50. An important system that's not very well documented in-game.

Horses: A guide to the mounts that are available and how to get them. Another essential system that the game itself doesn't give you many pointers on.

In addition to these guides to the core game, I've also put together full walk throughs for quests that added a lot to my enjoyment of the game once I figured out how to get through them.

How to get Orion's Belt: Running through this guide at level 30 will net you your first artifact (a powerful magic item that gains abilities as you level it) at a low enough level that all of its abilities will still be useful. In the process you will start in on your first glass quests and learn about several systems you'll use much more heavily at higher levels.

The level 50 Champion Quest series: This is a long quest chain that I had to split into two posts, part one and part two. Running though this quest chain on a fresh 50 will give you a huge head start on your champion levels (5+ levels), net you a decent amount of coin, and on Gaheris is also an entertaining way to earn your first few realm ranks.

If and when I decide to add new guides, I'll update this post. I hope you find these guides helpful. Happy hunting!
You can find a guide to the first part of this quest chain in my previous post, and a general overview of Champion Levels here.

This guide is mainly intended to get you through parts of this quest series that are confusing or out of date in the modern game. This isn't a standalone guide, you will still need to read the quests as you go to progress. I haven't been able to find anything at all on the web that gives hints for some of the very last steps in this chain. This guide should be enough to get you through all of the parts that can be soloed without using a buffbot.

Unraveling: Infernal Investigation

Like some of the last quests in this series, many of the instructions given by the quest text are either confusing or badly out of date with the modern game. For example, one part for hibernian players instructs them to go the the "frontier side" of Cruachan Gorge...which isn't very helpful since the entire zone is "frontier side" by definition. The quest is especially confusing on Gaheris since the portal stones that the first part of the quest refers to don't exist on that server. This is also one of longer quests in this chain.

In any case, the first thing you need to do is talk to your contact in the throne room. He sends you back to the same NPC that you gave the charred note fragments to in the last quest "Consulting the Keeper." This NPC will then send you out to the Frontiers. The quest text about where to go can be a bit confusing. What you need to do is head to one of your faction's border keeps. When you arrive, exit to the frontiers and look for an NPC hiding in a recess in the walls of the keep on your left as you exit (to the right if you are facing the keep entrance).

Albion: Castle Sauvage, look for Valayalla

Hibernia: Druim Ligen, look for Venana

Midgard: Svasud Faste, look for Thurid

After a conversation, you will get a location scroll that suggests where to look for demon summoning stones. Many of the landmarks it refers to haven't been in the game for years, and seemingly very few of these stones still exist. The only ones that I have been able to find consistently are the two in Cruachan Gorge. I have used these to complete the quest on hibs, mids and albs. One stone is west of Dun Ailinne near the road (near loc 36957, 48460), the other is north of it across the river (near loc 51673, 17532).* The spots where the stones are found are not very busy with other players in my experience. I've rarely even seen anyone else when I was fighting infernalists (see below).

One of the demon summoning stones in Cruachan Gorge. If you have high ranged DPS you can target the stone, spam it down and run away. Once you get a Chunk of Demon Stone in your inventory you are done, even if the stone appears to have a sliver of health left. On melee classes, you will have to carefully pull a few infernalists at a time until you can get to the stone. Both the quest text and some of the few posts I've found online about this quest warn you to bring a party, but these are quite doable solo if you are careful.

The goal is to destroy five demon summoning stones and collect fragments from them. The quest implies that you need to ride all over the frontiers looking for stones, but that really isn't the case. The two in CG are all you will need. Sometimes you can even get the quest done by waiting for a stone to respawn at one spot after you destroy it (I have actually gotten all five fragments at one spawn point before). However, generally you need to ride back and forth between the two locations in CG. If there isn't a stone at either of the locations I listed, the best thing to do is likely to log out and check back later (sometimes they can take ten+ minutes to respawn).

The other stone in Cruachan Gorge. The number and strength of infernalists you will find guarding a stone is quite variable.

Once you find a stone and worshippers, you need to take out the stone. A lot of the info I found about these stones online is wrong or at least out-of-date. For example, you don't have to be standing on the stone when you destroy it to get a Chunk of Demon Stone, and these encounters can certainly be soloed. You can pull two or three worshipers at a time and gradually clear out all the mobs around a stone (more advice for melees below). That makes the stone a lot easier to "kill." Alternately, if you have high ranged burst damage you can just spam down the stone and run away. You don't need to kill the worshippers to get the fragments you need. Even if you leave the worshippers completely alone, a stone will eventually respawn after you destroy it.

Getting to these stones on a class that lacks strong ranged damage can be a bit tricky, as you have to clear out all of the infernalists before you can safely get into melee range of the stone.

Melee characters: I have found these to encounters to be pretty tough on some melee classes. The Shield of the Soul Champion Level ability helps a lot, as does anything that gives you heat resistance. If you plink one of the regular infernalists with a ranged attack, sometimes they won't BAF and can be killed one at a time. If you get a group, keep in mind that all of the infernalists do roughly the same damage regardless of whether they con blue, yellow or orange. When fighting multiples, kill the weakest ones first to cut down on the damage you are taking as quickly as possible. Finally, if worst comes to worst you can kill one or two and then run away. They respawn slowly enough that you can generally clear out a stone this way.

Once you have Five Chunks of Demon Stone you can head back and give them to the NPC outside the border keep. Hand him the entire stack. He will give you a teleportation stone, which you need to head back to your capital to use. In some cases you need to be in the part of the city where the caster class trainers hang out to use the stone (e.g., the Academy of Magic for Albs).

After you use the teleportation stone, you will appear in the Arcane Tower from the one of the first quests in this series. When you arrive get ready for a fight (e.g., buff yourself and get out a pet if you have one). When you are prepared, give the Chunks of Demon Stone to the Keeper NPC and talk to him to start the ritual.
*Update: I also recently found one of these stones in Mount Collary, west of the tower in the center of the zone near loc 31304, 30766. I assume there are others.

Unraveling: Illusions of Grandeur

Part One

The first part of this quest has you gathering components to make a disguise. The steps vary by realm, but the quest text is accurate until the very last step (see below). Your contact sends you to talk to an NPC, target the NPC and "/say illusion." This NPC then sends you off to gather the ingredients she needs.

Hibernia: The quest instructions are generally pretty clear, but I found the final target, Feral Fecan Hunter near loc 6495, 41420, harder to find due to vague directions. A water breathing potion is a big help for the first two parts.

Albion: The first mob is easy enough to find. However, the pain eater is confusing if you didn't think to write down the instructions the NPC gave you in her dialogue. You need to go to an abandoned house SE of Caer Ulfwych (loc 54658, 48589). Kill all the gray disturbed presences until the pain eater spawns. The Feral Goblin Hunter is due east of the quest giver past the cave on the in-game map, at the north end of a small abandoned road out in the middle of the woods (near loc 30997, 6799).

Midgard: I found all of the quest instructions to be quite clear. A water breathing potion helps with the first part but isn't necessary.

Hand the ingredients to the NPC in the order she asks for them. The quest dialogue on this step is actually pretty funny. The NPC will give you a gem and send you to the High Consul's Sanctum. If you look at the in game map, the location is marked with a small cave icon.

The vest and pants grant you a Minotaur illusion.

Once you enter the sanctum, use the gem. This will put a vest and pair of pants in your inventory which you need to equip. Go and talk to the High Consul. He will give you a History of the Uruz which, after finishing your conversation with the High Consul, you take to a minotaur NPC outside near the sanctum. The hibernian NPC (Graoch the Ranger loc 17379,9814) is the only one that I found hard to locate my first time through.

Note: If you use the History it will put a bunch of scrolls in your inventory that you will have to destroy (Shift+D) to get rid of, though they are an interesting read if you are into lore.

Hand the history to the minotaur NPC, head back to the sanctum, and talk to the High Consul again. Select "explain" unless you want another copy of the history. He gives you a signalling whistle, and a quest that was pretty clear up until now goes straight to hell.

Part two

I was stuck on this step for a long time because the "labyrinth entrance" it sends you to is no longer in the game, and even if you have an idea of where to look finding the exact spot to use the whistle can be tricky. You need to head to Ellan Vanin and go to the gray tower icon on the map near your faction's entrance to the zone (near the gate). On Ywain there is at least still a tower on the spot, on Gaheris there is nothing there at all. Look for a clump of trees or bushes near the (possibly non-existent) tower and use the whistle. Talk to the minotaur NPC that appears to complete the quest.

Hibernia: near loc 6367, 48971.

On Ywain there are about a half dozen grannies standing in the spot you want. You need to clear them out before you use the whistle.

Albion: near loc 59865, 48247.

It may take a few tries to find the exact spot, stand in front of the rocks in the middle of some trees (surrounded by frogs on Gaheris).

Midgard: near loc 29798, 13437.

On Gaheris the NPC runs into the middle of a nearby swarm of icestriders when you summon him. Either clear them out and then talk to him or talk to him while they beat on you and run away once the next quest is started.
Unraveling: Crush the Alliance

Note: Almost all of the quest text instructions from here on out are still accurate in the modern game.

This and the next few quests are a good introduction to the Labyrinth if you haven't had a reason to go there yet. The minotaurs sometimes drop random mythirians and magic items. Nothing too spectacular, but on a fresh 50 some of it can (rarely) be an upgrade from king's gear. If you are on Gaheris they also drop glowing dreaded seals at a decent rate in the deeper areas like Clockwork. I've gotten anywhere from 4 to 25 seals doing these quests (6-8 is pretty typical), and depending on how much I used shortcuts rather than following the maps on foot.

Part One

The NPC from the last step gives you a map. From your realm's entrance to the labyrinth, use the map and follow the directions. Alternately, to save time, instead of following the map directions take the Obelisk near the entrance to Nurizane's Crossroads. The very end of the directions will direct you to the first set of corpses.

You will be looking for a lot of corpses. You don't need to click on them, just run up to them. As you find each set of bodies the quest will update and you can use the map to get directions to the next set of corpses.
1. Loc 46707, 24969
6. Loc 34099, 27547
7. Loc 36875, 29318*

The first locations appear to be somewhat random, but the directions when you use the map you were given are generally pretty clear. The last location is always the same. At this last location you will get jumped by an Orange Doppleganger. There is also a purple NPC (the Stonemason) patrolling nearby that will likely butcher you if you try to solo him. Run away up the stairs if he jumps you. Finally, after you beat the doppleganger at the last location, head back to the entrance to the Labyrinth.

The suspicious goblins surrounding the collapsed NPC will turn into dopplegangers when approached or pulled. They don't BAF, so you can safely clear them out by pulling them one at a time. The NPC will then send you to kill the Currupt Alchemist in the clockwork section of labby. If you use the map and follow the directions, he isn't too hard to find.
Optional Shortcut: head back to the entrance, use the obelisk to teleport to the Clockwork: Shrine of Tegashirg. The alchemist is just NW of where you arrive, hanging out behind a pile of crates near loc 30704, 29192.

When you kill the alchemist, he will drop a Poison Antidote. Go back and talk to the NPC near the entrance. Occasionally I have had all of the dopplegangers respawn on top of me when I started talking to the NPC. When this happens I ignore them, finish the conversation, and then run them off.

*The Alb one is a bit harder to find than the others: Left at statue, follow the passage around the corner to the right, left at the next 4 way (turn left when you can see the entrance to the stairs down), right at the next intersection (towards the wall sconce with the glowing green gem embedded in it), follow the passage left when you get to the wall sconce, left again at the next intersection at another wall sconce, then take your next right and follow the passage back.
Part Three

Next you will be sent to frame minotaurs for murder. In each case there will be a named mob you need to kill surrounded by soldiers, after which you go to the spot the named mob was standing in and use an item from your inventory to plant fake evidence. Generally the soldiers don't BAF so you can clear them out by pulling them one at a time and then go after the named mob. After you kill the named, you need to be standing very close to where he spawns to use the item you are supposed to plant. Be sure the "use" icon for the right item is set to your hotbar before you start these encounters. Check your quest journal to see which one you need to use for any given encounter.

Commander Ellerdos surrounded by his guards. At least on Gaheris the guards don't BAF, so you can pull them one at a time and clear them out. However, when I most recently ran through this series of quests on Ywain, tagging any of these mobs got me all five. For all four of the named mobs I was supposed to frame for murder I ended up killing the commanders, running in to plant evidence where the named mob was previously standing (while the guards wailed on me), and then running away.

Very often, the named mob and or his guards will respawn on top of you practically the moment you kill him. If you are still standing in the right spot, you can use your item and run away. Either run to a safe spot and kill everyone again, or try to run them off. If everything went well, the item you used will be gone from your inventory and your quest journal will tell you what to do next. The kill targets are:

(1st) Commander Ellerdos (Commander's Buckle ...NOT Button!): Near Loc 47057, 26710

(2nd) Commander Ottogron (Thelo Commander's Button): Near Loc 50387, 15627

The quest instructions about what item to use are sometimes wrong/ reversed. If you get the error message "Now is not the right time to use this item" after killing the first commander, use the other item instead. You might want to have both slotted to your hotbar when you kill him just in case. The kill targets that you are assigned may possibly vary somewhat from the two I listed above (if so, not very often). Regardless, the quest instructions are pretty clear on what hallways to look for your targets in. If you were able to find all the corpses in part one, you should have no problems.

After framing innocent minotaurs for two murders, go back to the trees near the (possibly non-existent) tower in Ellan Vanin and use your signalling whistle again.
Part Four

Head back to labby for two more murder frame-ups. Teleport back to the Shrine of Tegashirg in the Clockwork section. From the obelisk where you arrive, the first target is NW past the Currupt Alchemist. The second target is due west near a giant gear.

(3rd) Commander Talidrarg (Deifrang Signet Ring): Near loc 29423, 29406

(4th) Commander Irodrim (Korazh Insignia): Near loc 25380, 29481
Unraveling: Kingly Crisis*

This is pretty neat quest. After talking to the NPC in EV, head to the throne room, ready for a fight. Eventually a demon you need to kill spawns. He cons purple at first, but will eventually debuff to orange (generally when you attack). This fight is a piece of cake on a character that melees well. On a pure caster, it can be a bit more tricky (see below). Once you beat the demon talk to the high consul, the king, and then your contact.
Culmination: Lost, But Not Forgotten

Most of the steps in this quest are pretty easy to solo and self explanatory if you follow the instructions. For the first step, you just need to kill ten of the nearby corrupt priests.

Albion: the corrupt priests the near the Albion minotaur high priest most often con red. If you have made it this far chain killing reds shouldn't be a problem for you, but if you want a slightly easier time on this step teleport to Flooded: Shrine of Vartigeth (North or West). The majority of priests near those obelisks are generally orange.

The next step is to kill ten "corrupt engineers" for hammers and chisels. The only place I have been able to consistently find engineers is near the Shrine of Tegashirg in the Clockwork section. From the obelisk after you teleport in a few can spawn in the NW passage near the corrupt alchemist, but the best place to look for them is passage due West. If you don't see any, murder all the minotaurs in the western hallway down to the second intersection (the next intersection after the one with the gear), clear the passage that loops around to the south and back east from the second intersection, and finally wait for everything to respawn. You'll generally get at least two or three engineers as random respawns each time you clear out the hallway and the southern loop.

To find engineers, from the Clockwork: Shrine of Tegashirg obelisk head down the west hallway. When you get to the second intersection (shown above) turn to the south and loop around to finish out the "P" shaped path, killing every minotaur in sight save for the named mob and his gaurds. Every time you clear out this path and the mobs respawn, you'll get anywhere from 1-4 engineers. It usually takes me about three runs to get all the hammers and chisels I need. This is the best spot I've found for engineers, but there are in many other places in the Labyrinth where they can also appear.

The last step has you gathering ward stone fragments. Some interesting flavor text appears when you pick up each fragment. When you have all 12, give the stack of fragments (which look like DF blood seals) to the High Priest to finish the quest.

Albion: there are no fragments near you when you get last step, and the quest text doesn't tell you where to look for them save in the flooded sections of the catacombs. I would have been utterly baffled by this if I had happened to try this chain on Albion before I had done it with characters from the other two realms. You need to head go to Flooded: Shrine of Vartigeth (North) or (West) to get the fragments. There are also a few up the stairs nearby, but you'll need to kill several (most likely red con) priests to even get to the first one.

Culmination: Thivek's Fire

This appears to be the last quest in the chain. The quest sends you to kill two bosses deep in the labyrinth, and use an item in your inventory after you beat each boss. The first boss can be soloed with a few classes. The second boss is likely impossible without at least a buffbot.

Boss 1: Adjucator II.

Shortcut: Take an obelisk to Clockwork: the Great Forge of Thivek, head SW

You will need a party or at least a buffbot to take out this boss on most classes. I have been able to solo it after a few tries using a tank pet buffed with the Convoker ML 9 ability (Summoning Mastery) on an Enchanter. I imagine any class with access to strong pets and summoning mastery could likely solo this boss, albeit not without a bit of luck.

To kill the Adjucator, you have to first clear all the goblin repairmen around him. You only have to clear the center of the room and the part of the room near the boss. If any repairmen respawn kill them first before focusing on the boss again, or they will keep him healed. He generally spawns as a purple, but sometimes only as a red. Regardless, he has a ton of hitpoints and hits like a truck. If I recall correctly you also can't really kite him because if you get too far out of the room after you pull him he resets, and it's too hard to keep both halves of the room clear of repairmen solo.

A few classes can take out this boss completely solo. If you want to try it, clear out the goblin repairmen in the center of the room and near the boss before you engage him. If any repairmen respawn while you are fighting him, switch targets and kill them before focusing on the boss again. As long as any repairmen are alive, he's pretty much impossible to kill (at least solo).

Once the boss drops, quickly use the item the priest gave you to complete this part of the quest.

Boss 2: Maghras

Shortcut: Take an obelisk to Clockwork: Construct Assembly Room, head west.

I assume this is the final step in this entire quest chain. The majority of classes certainly can't solo this boss. I haven't been able to even using a ML 9 enhanced pet (but admittedly I've only tried once or twice). However, he is doable on some classes using only a buffbot (at least based on this youtube guide to farming him). I don't know if there are any steps past this fight because I've never beaten it, and there is no further information about this quest that I could find online. I assume the final reward is just more CXP and a platinum (and possibly a pat on the head), so I haven't yet tried to get a party together to take him down.

Regardless, if you have made it this far congratulations. You have gone through one of the more obscure and challenging (mostly) soloable quest chains in the game!
This guide is current as of March 2018, DAoC version 1.124D.Yeebohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08028940396189544294noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5554214285668550102.post-30328261229633186582018-02-21T22:28:00.000-08:002018-03-03T04:50:06.688-08:00The level 50 Champion Quest Line Part One: EmissaryThis is the first of two guides to the level 50 Champion Level quest series in Dark Age of Camelot. It's is a fun and rewarding challenge for a solo player. All but the last step of the quest chain can be soloed by most classes, yielding a ton of Champion XP (about 5 levels worth) and up to 1.2 platinum per step. If you are tired of running bounty quests for all of your champion levels on a fresh 50, it's a great alternative. On Gaheris, this is also a good way to start earning realm ranks. Adventuring in the Labyrinth during the last few steps will often get you enough Glowing Dreaded Seals as random drops for realm rank 2.5+.

The reason for this guide is that quest line is oddly obscure. It's easy to miss on many classes, and the instructions on some steps are completely out of date with the modern game. This guide is meant to get you through steps that are confusing and / or with outdated instructions. This guide is not meant to completely replace the in-game instructions. You'll still need to read the quests as you go to get through them.

This guide was written primarily on Gaheris. However, I've also recently done the chain using a Ranger on Ywain and I'll note below where steps differ on the two servers.

Getting started:

You can't start this quest chain until you are level 50 and have unlocked champion levels by talking to your King. After that, talk to the NPC that initiates most of your Epic quests. This varies pretty wildly depending upon your class, and in some cases isn't even a NPC anywhere in the capitol city. For example, many Hibernian classes need to head into Mag Mel to start this chain. If you haven't done your Epic quests, and so have no idea who this NPC is, talk to the class trainer in your capitol city to start Epic 1. That will generally send you to the correct NPC.

Most Midgaurd classes can start this quest by talking to one of the NPCs in the Temple of the Aesir near the front entrance of Jordheim. The locations of the starting NPCs are much more variable in the other two realms.

You will also want a fast horse for this quest chain, it involves a lot of running. If you don't have one yet, at the very least pick up a Chestnut Horse from the Quartermaster's Aide and head to housing to buy a heroic saddle.

Emissary: A King's Summons

It would make a heck of a lot more sense for this NPC to start the quest chain in the first place, but Broadsword seems to be in no danger of updating these quests any time soon.

Reward: 51 gold and some silver

After talking to your contact, you will be sent your realm's beginning Shadow Isles zone for the true start of this quest series.
The emissary sends you off to kill targets in the New Frontiers, but the directions given in the quest are vague at best. On Ywain, to get this quest done most easily pick the "explorers" option. I assume the other option forces you to kill other players, which might be a bit hard on a fresh 50 wearing King's Gear.

Assuming that you are hunting explorers (the easiest option on Ywain and the only one one on Gaheris) you are looking for hibernian, midgaurd or albion explorers. The two sets I have been able to find for this quest:

Hib or Alb: Go to Odin's gate, head NE along the river from the dock until you find midgaurd Explorers (loc 33691, 34409). On Ywain, you can take a boat to the Midgaurd Coast and travel to the spot from the east fairly safely.
After talking to the Emissary find a channeler and teleport to the Labyrinth entrance for your faction. Click on rocks near the stairs in the room you get sent to until you get a notification. Head out to the glowing obelisk nearby (just off the platform) and teleport back to a Border keep (such as Druim Ligen). From there head inside and use the channeler to teleport to your capital. Talk to your contact in the throne room first, then take the rock fragments to the Emissary. Time complete if you know what to do: Five minutes or less. Time to complete if you try to find the nonexistent entrance to the labyrinth in Ellan Vanin (or look for the fragments anywhere else in NF for that matter): Infinite . .

Ywain: there are what look like gate fragments near the outer towers in Ellan Vanin. It's likely these also work for the quest but I haven't tried them. On my Ranger I did this quest by using the entrance to the Labyrinth in Emain Macha. Entrances to the Labyrinth for all three realms are found in New Frontiers and the Dragon PvE zones. When you enter the Labyrinth, change the map to show the entry levels and look for a chamber with a colored dot on your map: (Alb) red, (Hib) green, (Mid) blue. This is where you want to go. From there, the steps are the same as above.
Part one

The instructions on where to find enemy soldiers are again quite vague. Head to whatever area abuts Ellan Vanin: (Alb) Hadrians Wall, (Hib) Emain Macha, (Mid) Odin's Gate. Head out to Ellan Vanin and look for soldiers hiding in the bushes near the outside ring of EV, off the road just on the other side of the gate. There will be two sets of soldiers, one on both sides of the road. Ex: Near loc 15216, 40924 for Hibs, near loc 50275, 40961 for Albs.

Soldiers of Albion"hidden" near the Midgard entrance to the main area of Ellan Vanin.

Kill them until a "Map of Ellan Vanin" appears in your inventory. Generally the first one you kill drops it. Head back to the throne room and talk to your contact. Give him the map. When he gives it back, take it to the emissary.

Gaheris only (shorcut): After you kill a soldier and get the map, talk to a channeler near the bridge at the entrance to EV. Port to a border keep (e.g., Drium Ligen) and from there back to the capital city.

Part two

Once again you are sent to Ellan Vanin, this time the quest instructs you to look for mounds of burning earth near the labyrinth entrances that don't exist. Madness and suffering await if you try to make sense of these instructions. The "burning mounds of earth" you need to find are not near where the entrances used to be in EV, nor near the existing labby entrances either in NF or elsewhere. Instead, they are in random spots along the outer walls of EV hidden behind and guarded by some of the toughest orange mobs in the game.

Gaheris: Head to EV, and use the in game map to look for a depression in the south wall of the outer triangle. It's near the entrance from Hadrian's wall, but that's not a good spot to approach it from unless you want to fight your way through a bunch of reds and purples. Near the Emain Macha entrance (near loc 15216, 40924) or near the tower icon along the main south road that runs east west (near loc 33096, 42743) you can sneak into the area. The village you want is near loc 42202, 51121.

Once you are there, the NPCs you want to kill (treasure hunters) are hidden to the left behind the main building. You will likely have to clear out some spirit mages to get line of sight on one of them with a ranged attack. If you pull a spirit mage, kite it out away from the village. You really don't want to fight two at once, or even fight one near the village. If any mages are too near to the one you are fighting, they will will chain heal your target whether you have aggroed them or not. Even away from the village, the mages self heal like crazy and use very high damage magic attacks. Use your best burst DPS abilities to spam them down. If you pull two and you are solo, run them off and try again for a single.

There are also treasure hunters in at least one (likely both) of the depressions in the outer wall of EV. However, they are positioned in such a way that it's even harder to get to them than the ones shown above.

Ywain: The mobs at the location above are bound at the hip, tagging any of them will likely get you at least three (often five or six). Instead, head to the depression in the NE part of EV filled with giants. Just as in the location I listed above, you need to clear out casters on the left side of the main structure (the one with the giant purple mob in it). These casters don't usually BAF and can be pulled and killed one at a time. When you have cleared out enough of the casters, you will have a clear shot at the two treasure hunters. The location is near the eastern docks and the Mid entrance to EV, which is a busy area so watch for enemy players. Doable but tricky.

Emissary: Consulting the Keeper
These quest instructions are still correct in the modern game. The only one of the follow up NPCs (the one you take the Charred Note Fragments to) that I had trouble finding the first time was the Hibernian one. Keeper Garran is in a random building near the Chamber of Magic at loc 17128, 23239. Head upstairs and around a corner, he is standing near a pair of beds. After an eventful conversation, return to your contact to complete the quest.
Champion levels are an advancement system that starts once you hit level 50, and talk to the king in your realm's capital city. You can gain up to 15 champion levels. Each level grants additional hit points, power and a champion point you can spend on new abilities. This guide discusses the various paths for gaining Cxp, the rewards you can expect along the way, and where to train champion level abilities.

Starting Out

When you first hit level 50, talk to the King in the Kings Throne Room of your capital city to unlock champion levels. You start off at Champion Level 0. If you left click click on the label to the left of your XP bar (in the character status summary window, by default in the lower right half of your screen), you can change it from displaying "Exp" to "Chp." When you mouse over the Chp text it will say "earning X champion level XP" where X is the champion level you are working towards unlocking. For example when you first talk to the King it will say "Earning Champion Level 1 XP." When you earn new champion levels you need to talk to the King to activate whatever levels you have unlocked. You can complete several Champion levels at once if you have earned more than one when you talk to the King.
Earning Champion Levels

There are several ways to gain Cxp. Killing any player or any mob that is high enough level grants Cxp. Champion levels 1-10 all take exactly the same amount of Cxp to earn, levels 11-15 each take significantly more. Items that grant bonus XP like Orion's Belt also grant bonus Cxp. For example, it's well worth carrying around Orion's Belt and putting it on before you use Cxp scrolls or turn in the final glass quests. There are two basic routes to quickly earning champion levels (Update: One method as of patch 1.125).

Bounty Quests and Cxp scrolls

***This section contains information about a legacy quest that was disabled in patch 1.125, skip to "End Legacy Information" to continue with the guide.*** On both Gaheris and Ywain there is [used to be] a repeatable quest "Scouting Ellan Vannin" that will get you a little over a third of a Champion level and 250 bounty points every time you run it. This quest is granted by an NPC (the Royal Emissary) in one of the New Frontiers camps you can port to from most channelers: (Alb) Commander Wentworth in Forest Sauvage, (Hib) Commander Locke in Cruachan Gorge, (Mid) Commander Hrurdan in Uppland. The towers that the quest refers to are no longer in game on Gaheris, but the gray icons for them are still present on the in game map of Ellan Vannin. On both Ywain and Gaheris the quest adds red dots your map that are in the right general area. On Gaheris, this is also the only easy source of large quantities of bounty points for a solo player I've found.

***End legacy information***

Bounty quests grant cxp and bounty points that can be used for a variety of rewards. The details of them are a bit beyond the scope of this guide, and have been subject to frequent developer changes in any case. On Ywain a popular bounty quest is "Supplies for the Cause"
granted by Cargomaster NPCs hanging out on specific docks in the new
Frontiers, either the dock in Emain Macha (Hib), Hadrian's Wall (Alb) or
Odin's Gate (Mid). Completing the quest yields a decent hunk of cxp. You can pick up the quest on Gaheris, but as nearly
as I can tell it can't be completed on that server.

To further speed up getting champion levels, you can use any bounty points you earn to buy Xp scrolls. Look for bounty point merchants, they are found in many border keeps and frontier camps. The easiest one to find is a Bounty Master standing near the same quest givers that used to grant Scouting Ellan Vannin. These merchants sell scrolls of "Bounty Master's Insight." The scroll of Greater Insight only costs 100 bounty points and grants 1600 Cxp (about one bub). Repeating bounty quests and using all the points to buy scrolls, you can burn through all of your champion levels in a few hours.

Questing at the Cap

If you haven't finished out all of the glass quests in Atlantis, each quest is worth a few bubs of Cxp (varying with how many mobs you end up killing to get the quest done), and if you are on Gaheris there is another easy questing option good for about a level.* There are Champion Quest lines that also grant Cxp, though the amount varies quite a bit depending upon the line you decide to work on. Unfortunately there is a bit of a dichotomy in these quests in that they are either easy to find and grant almost no Cxp, or grant great Cxp, are much harder to find, and have quest text instructions that are either unhelpful or actively misleading on some steps. The Champion Quest lines and how they stand in the modern game are as follows:

Level 30 Champion Quests: This is the quest chain you are offered at level 30 from a popup dialogue box. This is a long and interesting series of quests. They also grant no worthwhile rewards at any level. Even if you run out and do them at level 30, you are looking at maybe 1/4 of a level's worth of XP for a hour or more of work and you will get stuck on the last step. As a level 50 many of the mobs you need to kill to finish the last quest con orange or red, solo at level 30 it's pretty much suicide. You will also have a very tough time getting a party together to do the quest if you decide to try it at level 30, almost no-one runs this chain any more. At level 50, when you can actually solo the entire chain, the rewards from it are practically non-existent. Rewards at 50: 179 Cxp, 10 gold (total for the entire chain).

Level 40 Champion Quests: Once you finish the level 30 chain, this series opens up. I have no idea what the leveling Xp is like as I've never unlocked this chain before level 50. It's a long but decently fun quest chain that again yields no rewards to speak of. However, when you finish the chain you do unlock the same weapon you get for free at Champion Level 5 . . . so I guess there's that. Rewards at 50: 3276 Cxp, 20 gold (total for the entire chain), grants a Champion weapon even if you are not yet Champion Level 5.

Level 50 Champion Quests: These become available at level 50. To start them generally you need to talk to the same NPC that initiates most of your Epic quests. The quest line is also a bit obscure, with a start that's easy to miss on some classes and instructions that are not infrequently out of date with the modern game. Update: If you would like to try out this involved but rewarding series of quests, I have a guide to them up now. Part 1 covers how to get started and the Emissary quests, Part 2 covers the later steps that will eventually take you deep into the Labyrinth. You can solo all but the very last step in the quest chain on most classes (I've done it with everything from bolt casters to pure melee characters). Rewards: nearly 5 Champion levels worth of Cxp, around 8 platinum (just for the steps you can solo).

Champion level 10 Champion Quests: This final chain opens up once you hit Champion level 10. Champion levels 11-15 take considerably more Cxp to earn than the first 10 levels, and this quest chain is designed to get you through most of them. To start it, talk to the same NPC in the King's Throne Room that has been your contact for the previous Champion Level quests: (Alb) Chamberlan Harlan, (Hib) Seneschel Desmond, (Mid) Athr Hesetti Theyr. The first few steps can be soloed, but eventually you will get stuck and need a party to progress further. The furthest I have been able to make it solo got me almost to Champion level 12 and netted me about 5 platinum.

*On Gaheris you can return to Cathal Valley even at level 50 by talking to a channeler (on that server, this is one of the main ways to get around between various towns). If you grab the level 49 versions of all three bounty quests at the keeps for all three factions right before you hit level 50, you can come back after talking to the King and do these quests one more time. The level 49 versions of these quests are each worth between 2000 and 4700 Cxp when you turn them in.

Champion Level Progression

As you go up in Champion Levels, you will unlock a variety of rewards. You can read more about Champion Points and subclass trainers below. However, as you go up levels you will unlock various abilities, in addition to mounts and horse armor. Important levels are as follows:

Champion level 1: if you have taken a Champion Level ability that you need power to cast on a class that doesn't naturally have power (for example many melee classes), you will gain your first power points and the ability to cast spells.

Champion level 3: additional abilities of the King's Epics will activate. You will also unlock the ability to equip new types of equipment at this level. Doing so is not really useful for attacking or for stat boosts, but can be very handy for getting access to new "clicky" abilities. For example, pure spellcasters gain the ability to equip bucklers at this level. There is a common buckler (the Basalt Buckler of Oblivion) that can be activated to replenish your power. You can equip it in your offhand slot, and then re-equip a staff in your two handed slot to get the full benefits of your staff but also have access to the buckler's power replenishment ability.

Champion Level 5: You unlock your first Champion weapon, talk to the King and then a Weaponmaster near him in the Throne Room to get it. You will have your choice of two abilities to assign to the weapon. You can try different weapons and change out the ability at any time by talking to the Weaponmaster that gave it to you as long as the weapon is fully repaired (when you first get it is a good time to try out all the options that are available). The weapon will have a design unique to your class, and is likely to be better than any Artifact or Exemplar weapon you have available for the same slot. However it often isn't quite as good as the "illustrious" weapons that the Illustrious Merchant standing nearby, next to the king, sells for bounty points.

Champion Level 8: All horse armor is now usable, and additional abilities of the King's Epics will now be activated.

Champion level 10: All mounts are now usable. The final set of Champion level quests becomes available.

Champion level 12: The final abilities of the King's Epics are activated.

Champion level 15: Class cloaks become available, talk to your King in the Throne Room to get it after a short conversation. These are cloaks with stats tailored to your class and a unique look that matches the King's Epics. Depending on the class, the utility of these cloaks varies between "awesome, one of the very best cloaks in the game" and "not even as good as Shades of Mist" (an Artifact that's very easy to get) A second set of Champion Weapons also becomes available from a vendor in Darkness Falls in exchange for Blood Seals. These items are quite nice given how easy they are to get. Some of the CL 15 cloaks and weapons are even still used in modern end-game character builds.
Champion Abilities and Subclassing

Note: These abilities are only available for players with a monthly subscription. Free accounts get the other benefits of champion levels, but can ignore everything from here down (or read on for preview of what a sub can unlock).

As you gain champion levels you gain Champion Points that can be used to train a wide variety of abilities. You can mix and match abilities from three or four subclasses (depending on your realm), but you can't train abilities from a subclass that corresponds to your main class. For example, Rangers and Nightshades (the two hibernian stealth classes) can train abilities from from the Magician, Naturalist, Guardian and Forester subclasses but can't train any abilities from the Stalker subclass since this is the stealth subclass.

Training Champion Abilities in Hibernia. Spending points on these subclass abilities works a lot like talent points in many other MMOs. Each tier of abilities costs more points than the last, such that you will need to spend all but one of your champion points in a single line to get the final ability. I rarely find these upper tier abilities to be worth such a heavy investment, and generally spend my points in at least two lines (often from different subclass trainers).

To train Champion abilities, you need to find the subclass trainers in the first town you entered right after leaving the new player tutorial area. Subclass trainers can be found in the following areas:

Albion: on the bottom floor of a two story house (loc 13166, 28995) in the south part of Cotswold Village.

Hibernia: in a house (loc 27303, 8113) on the south side of Mag Mell.

Midgard: scattered around town in Mularn. Two of them can be found standing next to the quartermaster (loc 49133, 54906).

To plan what Champion abilities to buy, using a character planner is advisable. The one at excidio.net works really well for this, just select your class from the dropdown menu and and hit the "CL" tab.

How to respec Champion abilities:

If you decide that you don't like the champion abilities you have chosen, you can change your specializations at any time by visiting the King's Throne Room in your capital. If you are at least Champion Level 3, the Quartermaster sells an item called a "Luminescent Cambiare Stone" for 10 gold [Update: unfortunately as of early 2022 1 platinum!] Using this item resets your champion level abilities and refunds all of your champion points.
What to pick

More legacy information***Given how cheap and easy it is to redo your champion abilities this is a system that lends itself to experimentation. If an ability looks good to you on paper, take it out for a spin. If you don't like it, ditch it for something else. Even if you go through several builds doing this you aren't going to rack up much of a bill. Or at least that used to be the advice I gave out here.***

In the modern game (Updated January 2022)

For whatever reason Broadsword decided to change the cost of Cambiare stones to 1 platinum in late 2021. This won't affect long term players much, since vets tend to have 100s of platinum. Unfortunately, as a new player you might only have a few platinum to your name, so choose carefully.

Below I list some of the abilities that I tend to use a lot. All of these abilities are quite useful and can be unlocked with just a few champion levels. If any vets reading this want to recommend I add another ability to this list, let me know why in the comments and I will happily add it.

Shield of the Soul: a buff that lasts 20 minutes and adds 10% to your fire, cold, energy, body, matter and spirit resistance. Given that realm enhancements don't boost your resistances, this is a great ability if you don't have access to a buffer. It's also nice to use on your pets if you have any.

Shield of War: an instant cast that boosts your slash, crush and thrust resistances by 5% for a minute. It's only ok, but it also only costs three champion points.

Low level DoT abilities (the names vary a lot by subclass): if you are playing a class that doesn't have any ranged attacks, for example many pure melee classes, this beats the hell out of carrying around a stack of throwing weapons and only costs one champion point.

Damage Add abilities (names vary): These self buffs last for 20 minutes and add spirit damage to all of your melee attacks. Not a huge damage boost, but well worth 2 points.

Cure Poison/ Cure Disease: Cure poison also cures all dots, and so is very handy for solo PvE work. Diseases last a long time and are annoying, having an easy way to clear them is nice (though only situationally useful given how rare diseases are in PvE and the cast time).

Group Heals: decent for boosting your health regeneration out of combat if you aren't going down the line that has single target heals, and you'll have to take it anyway if you want to unlock access to Shield of the Soul. I have also read that you can spam these abilities in RvR fights for easy Realm Xp, but I haven't tried it.

Stat Buffing Skills: these don't grant even as much of a boost as the realm enhancements that you will have up pretty much all the time, and so aren't that great on most classes. However, if you have pets these are very nice for buffing them. Tank pets in particular benefit a lot from the physical buffs.

This guide assumes you'll start out by following the new player experience quest series. In my opinion this is the best progression route for players completely new to DAoC. You will level fairly quickly and get solid gear as quest rewards along the way. It's also a stress free way to gradually learn the basic game mechanics. Unfortunately, those quests run out at around level 35, and the guidance you are given in game on where to go next is pretty useless. This guide contains one possible leveling route through to 50. The leveling path I've laid out here is designed largely to be pain free for new players getting their feet wet.
*This guide covers where to go and what to do, not mechanics or character builds. To figure out what skills to pick as you level, using a character planner is nearly mandatory in DAoC. Vanesyra's Online Charplaner is the best one I know of. This guide also isn't really aimed at players completely new to MMOs.
Alternate Routes

For an overview of all of the activities available at every level Etaew's guide is still good, though the task dungeons have been disabled. If you are on a regular server (Ywain) and want to level doing PvP, you can ignore this guide and head to the battlegrounds. As soon as you get out of the new player tutorial look for a Battleground Channeler standing next to the bind stone to send you to The Hills of Claret. There are repeatable kill quests in the battlegrounds that will level you just as quickly (if not more so) than the new player quest series. The official website covers battleground quests pretty well. Just remember to buy gear as you go. If you are a bored vet that just wants to level As Fast Humanly Possible, this route that Ugo Phelix posted on Post Count is pretty damn fast. Edit (update Jan 15): Zume recently posted a guide similar to this one for Hibernian players, definitely worth a read for hibs!

Starting Out
Your first minute (setting up your hotbars):

Unlike any other MMO I can think of, you will need to dig through up to five menus when you first start just to get your hotbars set up correctly. This is a real kick in the 'nards for a really new player, and I hope Broadsword gets around to improving it at some point* In any case, after you have figured out how to get your empty hotbars where you want them on your screen (the default placement is pretty wonky), to fill them up with abilities:

1. Hit L to open your combat styles menu (or hit the button with the red background from the menu bar in the upper right part of your screen) and drag the icon for the style that corresponds to your starting weapon to your hotbar. If you aren't sure what type of weapon you have, hit C to open the character panel and mouse over your weapon to see what damage type it uses.** If you are a pure spellcaster this menu will be empty, ignore it.

2. Hit K to open your spell menu and drag any spells that look useful to your hotbar.*** If you are a pure melee class, this menu will be empty.
3. Hit P to open up the specializations menu. Look for icons for Sprint (any character), Quickcast (pure spellcasters) and / or Stealth. Drag these to your hotbar.
4. In your inventory (hit I to open it) is an item called a Personal Bind Recall Stone. Right click it and drag the "Gateway" icon to your hotbar.
5. Optional (setting up hotbars for more actions): You can also set up hotbar buttons for additional actions. For example, by default pure casters don't have a button to start attacking with their staff. To make an attack hotbar, hit C to open up the character menu. At the bottom hit the "command" button. In the command sub-menu, Shift+left click the "attack" button to make an icon that you can drag to your hotbar.
*One very easy way to implement this would be for the icons from steps 1-3 above to be added to your hotbars by default when you first start (similarly to how it's handled in most MMOs).
**When you are offered weapons as quest rewards in the next five minutes, make sure the damage type of the weapon you pick matches the style you have decided to train in. For example if you are training up the "blunt" weapon skill, pick weapons that list crush damage. It seems like common sense, but I've seen new players mess this up and have a horrible time in the tutorial because of it.
***Whenever you learn a higher level version of a spell, check your spell list to see if there is a new spell icon you need to swap out for your old one. The higher level version of the spell will replace the old one on your hotbar automatically as soon as you learn it on some classes, but not generally on pure casters.
These are the hotbars I set up on a new level one Ranger (a hibernian archer class). The weapon I started with was a slashing weapon so I chose the one "blades" attack style I had available to put on my hotbar. Later I picked a weapon with thrust damage as a quest reward and starting training and equipping piercing styles instead. The weapon icons you see on the right side of the upper bar I created by equipping weapons and then dragging their icons to hotbar slots. Those buttons allow me to quickly switch between a bow and melee. Only archers generally need to worry about switching weapons in the middle of a fight, so you won't need to set up these specialized buttons on most classes.

The new player quest series:

For your first few hours of play all you really need to do is follow along with the new player quest series. About every five levels you will get sent to a new quest hub. Almost all of the quests in the new player series are pretty straight forward. The new player quest series will take you quickly and easily at least to level 35. Even your first time through, there are only a few things I can think of that might be confusing:

Which quests are part of the new player series: The quests indicated by a special icon with a knot surrounded by three diamond shapes are part of the new player series (in general). Quest icons that lack those extra diamonds are usually side quests or legacy quests.*

Notice the three diamonds around the central symbol floating above this NPC's head. This usually indicates it's part of the main new player quest series, or a primary PvP quest (for example a battleground repeatable kill quest). Be sure to knock all or most of these quests out in one area before you move on to the next, or you will be leaving a lot of XP behind.

How to use an item: Several quests will put an item in your inventory you need to use during the quest. The most reliable way to do this is to open the item description (right click on the item in your inventory) and drag the "use" icon to one of your hotbar slots. The use icon will be a question mark or a picture of a hand. Some of the equipment that you get as quest rewards will also have useful abilities, for example a health or power replenishment ability. Such abilities often have starburst icons. These can be added to your hotbar the same way.

How to quickly sell things: left click any NPC merchant, then left click the item you want to sell in your inventory. Hit Shift+S to sell your item, select the next item and repeat.

How to destroy an item: Occasionally you will have an item taking up space in your inventory you no longer want, and that you can neither sell to vendors nor drop (very often one of the starter weapons from the tutorial area has this bug). To get rid of one of these items, select it and hit shift+D.

How to pick up dropped loot: To get loot bags off of the ground, select the bag or item you want to pick up and hit G (for grab). DAoC is the only MMO I am aware of that won't let you do this just by mouse clicking on loot.

The only hard quests: One quest in the Albion series and one in Hibernia will have a NPC quizzing you. You can figure out most of the answers using the in game map. However, if you have any trouble the answers are:

Old man in Hibernia
- "Lough Derg"
- "Druim Ligen"
- "Cuuldurach"

Geographer in Albion:
- "Castle Sauvage"
- "Salisbury Plains"
- "Dartmoor"

Quests to ignore: Once every hub, you will get a quest to kill an Epic mob. These absolutely can't be soloed on most classes (at least when you are the right level for the quest), and can safely be ignored. Even if you get a party together and complete them the rewards are pretty mediocre. You will also occasionally get a quest to go to a battleground. If you are on Gaheris, these can't be completed. Ignore them if you are on the Gaheris rule set server.

What if I run out of quests (pre-level 35)? With the launch of endless conquest the amount of XP that you get from quests and killing mobs has been tweaked, and it seems to be a bit off target. Fairly often now you will find yourself needing to grind out a bub or two of XP killing random mobs to unlock all the quests in an area. This is especially common on Gaheris. If you find yourself in a new area where you have only been offered one or two quests, find some random blue, yellow or orange con mobs to kill nearby. Getting to the next level should unlock more quests.

*By legacy quests I mean quests from the first few years of DAoC, before the new player quest lines were added. These are especially common if you stray off the beaten path. Very few of them are worth doing these days unless you just want to see the story lines. They take a long time, are sometimes broken in the current game version, and yield really meager XP and item rewards.

Optional Low Level Side Activities

In addition to the new player main quest series, several side quests are available even at low levels.

Optional free low level gear: When you get out of the tutorial area if you go and talk to a one of your class trainers in the nearby capital city (i.e., Camelot, Jordheim or Tir Na Nog), you will be granted a weapon and possibly also a chest piece designed specifically for your class. Confusingly, some classes don't need to go to the capital for the chest piece (any class trainer will give it to them), but members of every class need to head into the capital for the free weapons. You can repeat this every five levels (10, 15, 20) for more free gear up until level 25 (the last set granted this way).

Epic Quests: The class trainer in your capital city will also direct you to start on your Epic Quests if you are at least level five when you talk to him or her. This is a series of quests that grant fairly nice low level gear and take you through a story that most classes won't get to see. Every five levels a new step in this quest chain opens up. You can find walkthroughs of all of them here at ZAM. Most of these quests can be easily soloed, and will grant you an accessory (a belt, cloak, ring, jem or necklace) that is better for your class than the generic ones that the new player quest series yields. However, epic quests involve a lot of travelling and most of the gear you get will be utterly useless by the time you get to level 50.* When I am leveling a new character I do these quests as I go to add some variety to leveling up on different classes, and I enjoy them quite a bit. Even so, in the modern game these quests are pretty much strictly for flower sniffers. You won't miss the gear if you skip them.
*The cloak from step 7 and the belt from step 8 excepted, those are actually a step up from the free gear you get can from the king at level 50 on some classes.

Your first artifact: At level 30, a really useful artifact (Orion's Belt) becomes available. Going through the process of getting it will also teach you several game systems you'll want to know about later and grant you 2-3 levels worth of XP for completing two short quests. If you want to take a long side trip to get it, I posted a walkthrough written for new players.

Levels 35 to 45

When you finish out your last new player series quest hub, you will be given one final quest to go to a border keep. For example, Midgard players will get a quest "Summons to Vindsual Faste" that directs you to use a channeler to go to the border keep and get more quests. This is where the new player experience completely falls apart, especially now that Task Dungeons have been removed. The next five levels are going to be a bit repetitive if you stick to PvE. However, if you can weather through it, things will pick up considerably at level 40.

A brief detour to a border keep:

Go ahead and use the nearest channeler teleport to the border keep that your final quest suggests:

- Albion: Snowdonia Fortress
- Hibernia: Druim Cain
- Midgard: Vindsual Faste

When you get there, first talk to the keep commander and pick up all the quests he has for you. Just talking to him nets you about a bub of XP. After that, look for a channeler nearby and head to Atlantis (i.e., Oceanus Haven) if you haven't already done the level 30 bounty quests there. Etaew has a great walkthrough of them.

Getting to 40:

Your short term goal is now to get to level 40 as quickly as possible. There are up to three fairly quick options for this, depending on your class and server.

(Option 1) Repeat the level 30 bounty quests (currently for Ywain only): All of the level 30 bounty quests in Atlantis (Oceanus Haven) are repeatable for coin and XP, though they only grant bounty points the first time through. You can grind through them three or four times and make it to 40 that way. This seems to be what most players that don't level in the battlegrounds choose to do.

[NOTE: the last patch broke this option on Gaheris. There these quests can currently only be repeated once and then never again. Until Broadsword gets around to fixing it, on many classes the only viable option solo once you've exhausted the options below is to grind out any levels you have left on random mobs]

(Option 2) The battle for Molvik (Ywain only): One of the quests that the keep commander gave you was the Battle for Molvik. If you head there, there are some kill quests that are good for easy XP. There will be two spots with kill targets near your keep. If you hug the shore of the lake between yourself and those spots it's not very likely you will see any enemy players (e.g, right before I wrote this I ground out two levels in Molvik and never saw a soul).

This option is probably a bit faster than heading back to Atlantis. The XP on quest turn in is almost identical between the two. However, in Molvik you only need to kill 8 mobs per quest (vs. 15 in Atlantis) and you get a few bounty points every time you finish. Unfortunately, on Gaheris, this battleground is closed and you can't do these quests at all.

(Option 3) Dungeons: The keep commander will also suggest that you head to a random dungeon. There you can take a quest to go into the dungeon and kill high level bosses. If you want to try it, head in and look for red dots on the map.* Trying to make your way to the bosses solo is nearly suicide on a lot of classes, but if you are playing a character that can kill mobs quickly in melee range it might be worth a try. If the mobs in the first dungeon you try are too are to high level, try the next lower level dungeon down on the list from a Dungeon Surveyor. If you can find a Dungeon where most of the mobs con green and gray, hunting bosses is sometimes fairly easy. Alternately, if you are just looking to grind out some levels, higher level trash mobs in dungeons are solid XP per unit time and will drop a lot of level appropriate loot for you to pic through. Note that on Gaheris you can do the dungeon quests in all three realms.
*Unfortunately, these dots are missing in a few of quests. In that case, look for dead end rooms far from the dungeon entrance. That is often where you will find a boss. You can check the quest journal entry to see how many bosses you have left to kill.

The Hibernia dungeon Treibh Caillte, and presumably at least some other dungeons, have a pretty oddball teleporter system. To use a teleporter like the one above, first you kill the golem standing on it. Then move to the middle of the teleporter and wait. When the mob respawns you will be moved to a new location.

(Option 4) Additional Quests Hubs (Gaheris Only): On Gaheris you can run the new player quests of all three realms. For example, a Hibernian character can run the Midgard and Albion new player quests if you know how to get to the areas that have them. The quests in the final hub of each realm are worth a good bit of XP, at least one or two quick levels if you hit both of the ones outside of your native realm. The final quest hubs of each realm are as follows: [Albion - Adribard's retreat]: to get there travel to Avalon Marsh using the nearest channeler. [Hibernia - Connla] To get there travel to Shannon Estuary using the nearest channeler. [Midgard - Fort Atla] to get there travel to Gotar using the nearest channeler. When you arrive in Gotar, buy a ticket to Fort Atla from the nearby stablemaster.

One way or another, when you hit level 40 stop what your are doing and head back to the border keep mentioned above.

New gear and level 41:

Once you hit level 40, the commander of the border keep mentioned above may have a new quest for you, "The Lost Lands of Atlantis" if you are on Gaheris. Go to the keep and grab this if it's available. Your gear will also likely be getting a bit long in the tooth by now. Whether the Lost Lands quest is available or not, this is a good time for an upgrade. There is a series of quartermasters in the keep along one of the walls. Find the one that sells level 40 gear, and buy whatever you want. Once you are geared up, use the channeler to go to Oceanus Haven.

When you arrive Realm Scholar Destin will be standing behind you. Talking to him nets you half a level of XP for completing The Lost Lands of Atlantis if you were able to get the quest.

Regardless, next you want to either find an NPC standing in front of a pillar near the entrance to the Hall of Heroes, or talk to Wicoessa (near you when you arrived, the NPC that grants Relics of the Deep). One of these NPCs will grant the quest Feuding Tritons. When you find the NPC that has it, accept the quest.

Feuding Tritons is the nosering quest that leads to the level 40 bounty point quests. Despite the fact that the quests are listed as level 40, most classes can't easily solo them until at least level 41 (more below). After you pick up Feuding Tritons, find the dock on the east side of the island. Underwater near this dock is stable master Feurbe. Swim over to him and buy a ticket to Mesothalassa.
When you buy the ticket, you will be sent on the back of a hammerhead shark to the area with the next set of bounty point quests. When you arrive, first talk to Noula and grab her bounty quest.

Next, head northeast to Sirina (loc 38777, 34615) and talk to her. Finally, head to the western part of the island and talk to Mylia (loc 30667, 31480) to complete Feuding Tritons. Don't try to run through the middle of the island to get to her. There are aggressive red and purple mobs on the island that will butcher you if you get anywhere near them. Instead, skirt the southern shore of the island, right along the waterline, until you get near Mylia. Talking to her grants you between three and nine bubs of XP.* Hopefully this will be enough to get you to level 41. If not, you can head back to Oceanus Haven and run Relics of the Deep one or two more times to get to 41. On Ywain you can also run kill quests in Leirvik. The way it's laid out you can pick up one or two levels very quickly with minimal risk, there are two sets of mobs to kill practically on the doorstep of your keep.
*With the launch of EC, this appears to be broken on Gaheris. The quest currently only grants one bub of XP. With Relics of the Deep Currently broken and unrepeatable you will need to head back to wherever you ground out levels 36 to 40 and grind some more. Come back when you hit 41.

Level 41-45: The next set of bounty quests

The second set of bounty quests are listed as level 40, however the lowest level mobs you can kill for the quests are very tough opponents if you aren't at least level 41 (level 42 is even better). Noula will give you your choice of two sets of tritons to kill for her bounty. You want to go after the Skyros Order tritons, in the area marked "Skyros Territory" on your map (to the northwest of the island where you get the quest). At least some of these tritons will be orange if you are level 41. The other tritons that count for bounty quests will all be red or purple even at 41.

After you turn in Noula's quest, pick it up again and then talk to Mylia to get her bounty quest. You can head out and kill Skyros tritons again, and this time each kill will count towards both quests. Keep doing these two bounty quests until you hit level 43. At level 43, you should be able to handle tritons in the other two locations as well. Sirina will send you to kill tritons northeast or south of the island. I generally double up her bounty quest with Noula's and kill the Melos tritons to the south because they are so close by. Repeat these quests until you hit level 45.

Level 45 to the Cap

By now you should be getting the hang of things. Depending on what you decide to do next, you may only be an hour or so away from the level cap. The moment you hit 45 there are a few things you'll want to do.

New level 45 gear

At level 45, new sets of gear become available. If you head back to your border keep, you can buy a full set for a few hundred gold. You can sell this gear back for almost half of what you pay for it when you are done with it, and lately this is the gear I've been using from 45-50. In Cathal Valley there is also a vendor that sells gear for bounty points. It's well worth at least picking up some weapons here if you are on Ywain (and haven't filled out those slots with artifacts), they are noticeably better than the ones you can get at the border keep.

Artifacts

All Artifacts become usable at level 45. If you followed my guide on Orion's Belt, you should already know how to buy them with bounty points. They are a lot of fun to play around with, and by now you should have enough bounty points to buy at least one more. However, for serious end game character builds most of them have been superseded by other newer items, and they have terrible repair costs. That said, there are a few I really like and always get if I can use them:

Snatcher: any class can use this bracer, it grants realm XP and bounty point bonuses once leveled, and it has decent stats. On Gaheris even if it doesn't fit into your template* you will still probably want it available to put on when you turn in dreaded seals. Quest credit: Snatcher Credit. Item turn in to activate: Snatcher.

Crocodile's Tears Ring: mainly usable by pure casters. The level 6 ability converts 5% of incoming damage into health and power, very handy. Quest credit: Crocodile Tear Ring Credit. Item turn in to activate: Tyrus' Epic Poem. Classes that can use it listed here.

Magma Battler: for solo PvE work, for example finishing out the glass quests, I really like this weapon . . .at least if I'm using large slashing weapons. It has decent bonuses to melee damage and attack speed. More importantly it will sometimes cast an accuracy buff on you, often enough that you will almost always have it up when you are fighting. With a big slow weapon misses really hurt your DPS, so a proc that cuts down on them is nice. Finally, the ability it gains at level 10 that you can activate manually is also quite useful. That said, it's not considered a good main hand weapon choice for either PvP or high end PvE by theorycrafters. Quest credit: Bane of Battler Credit. Item turn in to activate: Battler. Classes that can use it listed here.

Unfortunately there is no in game guidance as to which classes can use particular artifacts, what abilities they gain as you level them, or even what items you need to buy from the bounty point vendors to unlock them. If you google the name of any artifact you are considering (+ daoc) you can find this info on the web, as little of it has changed since DAoC had a much more active active community (at one time it was the second most popular MMO behind Everquest). Templating* and what artifacts are useful for what classes in modern DAoC is way beyond the scope of this guide. This is the only comprehensive guide I've found to what artifacts are still considered useful for the endgame, and it's nine years old . . .so take it with a really big grain of salt. For the most part, it's probably better to save your glass for master levels or conversion to other currencies than to go crazy on artifacts.

*Templates (or Temps for short) are DAoC slang for final character builds including optimal gear for PvP or raiding. For any content I will discuss in guides on this website, the free epic gear you get from the King at level 50 will work just fine.

Getting from Level 45 to 50

One obvious route is to keep doing Atlantis bounty quests until you hit level 50. Etaew's walkthrough of the final glass quests (these quests used to grant glass instead of bounty points) should be all the guidance you need for those.* However, the glass quests are also worth a good bit of Champion Level XP, so I generally wait until level 50 to do them.

That leaves quests in the Cathal Valley battleground. This is how I generally do my last five levels. Assuming you don't get chain ganked, it's very fast.

*One minor thing that his guide doesn't mention is that sometime when you try to turn in a glass quest you will get the error message "You must have room in your inventory for your rewards." This is a bug. The message doesn't refer to the glass itself, but to all the non-existent items listed at the bottom of the quest dialogue box (the odd equipment icon and a bunch of question marks). You have to have room in your inventory for all these random items the the quest doesn't actually give out (?!). Generally dropping all the artifact scrolls you don't want will free up enough room to turn in the quest.

Getting your last five levels in about an hour on Gaheris

On Gaheris you can take the kill quests for all three factions in Cathal Valley. If you take advantage of this, you can go from 45 to 50 very quickly. After gearing up with level 45 equipment from a border keep, go to CV Albion, CV Midgard, and CV Hibernia and get all three of the bounty quests from the captains in each keep. Then repeat one of the bounty quests (e.g., the Midgard quest "A Bone to Pick" is very quick) until you hit level 47. At this point, you will get offered new higher level versions of all of the bounty quests again. Get them from all three keeps one more time, and head out into CV proper to do all of them. Every single kill will now count for either two quests or six quests (!). Turn in all three sets of quests and you will either hit level 50 or be very close to it.

What to do at level 50 (a very abbreviated guide)

The first thing you will want to do is head to the king's throne room of your realm's capital city and talk to your king to get a free set of level 50 epic gear. The stats on it were boosted for the launch of Endless Conquest. It's still not quite best in slot, but it is certainly solid starter gear.

From there a lot of options open up. This video posted by CDFTW at post count is a good starting point. It's also always worth checking the latest guides posted by players at the official forums. My first post here was a guide to mounts that you may find helpful. You may also want to read up on the Dragon's Curse Campaign and the Other Worlds Campaign (the Federation of Hibernia has a great guide to the Hibernian quests), though you won't be able to make much progress in either quest chain solo (you really need a raid group to run them). The DAOC Utilities website* will help you start planning a template, and Worldlygamer recently posted a video on the new bounty point crafting system.

Further advancement:

In Dark Age of Camelot there are three primary advancement routes besides simply getting to level 50.

Master Levels: Each class has two master level paths available, each of which opens up new sets abilities with each level (up to a max of level 10). Etaew's guide to master levels is still up to date and really useful. The system is primarily designed for PvP and realm vs realm battles. In PvE encounters (and therefore on Gaheris in general), whether abilities are useful or even work at all varies pretty wildly.*

Champion Levels: Once you hit level 50, Champion levels open up after a conversation with your realm's King. You can gain a maximum of 15 champion levels. Each champion level grants a bonus to your hit points and power, along with an ability point that you can spend on a subclass tree (they work a lot like talent trees in many other MMOs). Killing most things that used to give you regular XP grants champion experience (Cxp), there are many quests that grant Cxp, and there are scrolls you can buy with bounty points that grant Cxp in big hunks. You can read more about Champion Levels in my guide to them.

Realm Ranks: This is the primary means of advancement at the level cap. The official website covers these pretty well. You advance in this system by gaining realm points (also sometimes called realm experience points and referred to as "realm XP" in guides on this website). Realm XP is gained mainly by killing enemy players, but can also be gained by healing allies. The first few ranks are quite easy to get, the highest ranks are such an insane grind that only a few players per server have ever achieved them. The main benefit that the system provides is that each level (ten levels per rank) provides one realm skill point to buy realm abilities with. What abilities you should invest in and in what order is something you need to research for yourself, and subject to debate in any case.**

Realm Ranks on Gaheris: The way that you get realm XP is completely different on Gaheris. Every level past 20 you get one free point to spend on realm abilities (that's essentially 3 free realm ranks by level 50). At almost any level (though it's certainly much easier at level 50) you can also find Dreaded Seals, which drop off of certain mobs. You give these to Dreaded Seal Collectors for realm XP. Many mobs in the New Frontiers and most mobs in level 1 and deeper levels of the Labyrinth have a chance to drop Glowing Dreaded Seals. This is a good succinct guide to get you started.

*I have tested most of the master level abilities on Gaheris. That's the focus of a future guide, but the short short guide to Master Level on Gaheris is: For the love of god don't pick Battlemaster!

**That said, I personally consider one or two points into Mastery of Focus damn near essential on a pure caster. You need enough points in this ability that the level of the offensive spells that you usually cast plus the bonus levels of this ability add up to at least 50 (level totals past 50 don't have any additional effect). This will significantly lower the chance that both mobs and enemy players will resist your spells. You can also get this effect from certain magic items, but there is almost always something better available. It's not usually worth blowing an equipment slot to save one or two realm skill points.

This guide walks you through how to get a quick level boost at 30 and how to obtain your first artifact, Orion's belt, at level 35. Once fully leveled, this powerful item will give you 5% bonus to all experience points and realm experience earned. It will have better stats than any of the belts you are offered during the new player quest series, and for a few classes it's even better than the exemplar's belts offered as part of the free epic gear at level 50. Finally, on Gaheris it's especially useful as you can put it on when you turn in seals for the realm XP bonus and use something with better stats the rest of the time (you can both consume your cake and possess it!).

The main reason for this guide is that it introduces new players to a lot of things you need to know about. Channelers, how to get to Atlantis, how to start your first quests in Atlantis, and how to buy artifacts. The latter process is especially confusing the first time on Gaheris. DAoC specific terms I'll use a lot in this post:

Channeler: An NPC that can teleport you to a wide variety of locations. Channelers generally have a blue ring around their feet.

Artifact: unique magic items that gain abilities as they gain levels. You level artifacts by killing foes anywhere while they are equipped.* There are a huge variety of artifacts. Which ones are useful in the modern game and for what classes is way beyond the scope of this guide. Fortunately, Orion's belt is useful for any class, particularly for the XP bonus while you are still leveling.
*You can also skip the leveling process and obtain an artifact that is already level ten by beating certain high level encounters specific to each artifact. The Orion's Belt encounter can be soloed at level 50. However, waiting until 50 to get it makes the bonus XP ability completely pointless.

Glass: currency introduced with the Trials of Atlantis expansion, used mainly to buy artifacts and Master Levels. It was removed with the launch of Endless Conquest in November 2019, but you will still see many references to it in guides to the game.

Getting Started (a quick level boost)

Assuming that you are following the new player quest series, when you hit level 30 you will usually be in the second to last quest hub. Either stop what you are doing immediately or finish out the quests in the hub you are working out of before you go on. When you are ready, make your way to the nearest channeler so that you can travel to Atlantis.

Albion: When you hit level 30 you will most likely be doing quests at Campacorentin Station and the Lethantis Association in Campacorentin Forest. Buy a stablemaster ticket to Adribard's retreat.* If you finish out all the new player quests in Campacorentin Forest you will also eventually get a quest to go there. When you arrive at Adribard's retreat, look for Channeler Ni'tul hanging out on a stone dock southwest of the keep, nearly west from where you arrive if you take a horse.
*The dragonfly is much quicker than the horse, but also drops you off on the roof of a keep. You have to run down several flights of stairs when you arrive to get outside the keep if you take the dragonfly.

Hibernia: When you hit level 30 you will most likely be doing quests at Howth. Buy a stablemaster ticket to Connla in Shannon Estuary. If you finish out all the new player quests in Howth you will also eventually get a quest to go there. When you arrive at Connla, Channeler Drolg is standing next to a tower across the river southeast of town. You can swim across to it, or grab a ticket from the stablemaster to Culraid and jump off the horse when you get near the tower (the Culraid horse route runs you right past the channeler).
Bounty Quests in Atlantis

Until very recently these quests were for Glass. They now yield bounty points. Unfortunately, with this change it is no longer possible to get enough bounty points for Orion's Belt from PvE quests until at least level 35 solo. However, this quest series is still good for enough XP to net you a few levels really quickly (about five minutes per repeat once you are familiar with this chain).

You will arrive in Hesperos Haven in Mesothalassa. When you get there, the first quest giver you need to talk to is standing behind you. Turn around and talk to Destin to get a quest.
.
Go ahead and pick up her quests, just be aware of the fact that you can't solo them until level 34 at the earliest. The last quest you are here to do for now is Relics of the Deep, which you picked up from Wicoessa. For Relics quest head out into the water off the east coast of Hesperos Haven island. There will be a red dot on your in-game map showing you where to go. Once you get in the right area, you are looking for wooden chests on the bottom of the ocean.

Click on 8 of the chests, then go back to Wicoessa to turn in Relics of the Deep (274 million XP, 12 gold, 500 bounty points). By now you should at least have hit 31. The quest is repeatable for XP
and gold, though it only yields bounty points the first time you do it. On repeats you will also need ten chests rather than eight.

The rest of the quests you just grabbed are all marked
level 30, but most of the mobs you need to kill con red and purple until
you are in the mid to high 30s level range (at least 35 is best for most classes). Etaew has a great walkthrough of all four quests in any case. Once you can finish out all four quests, you will have enough bounty points to get Orion's Belt.

Once you have it in your inventory, hand it right back to her. You will get a notification "You have completed the Belt of Orion quest." To unlock any given artifact you need to both to complete a quest and some items that drop randomly off of particular mobs in Atlantis. However, once you complete the quest you can also buy what you need from an eagle headed Spinx named Zosyne, standing right beside Aphaestia. The latter method is a heck of a lot easier. Buy an item from Zosyne called "Great Hunt, complete story." Once you have it, you are nearly done.

In the middle and back of the Hall of Heroes are various Scholars, Loremasters and Sages. You are looking for one that will give you Orion's Belt. He or she will be marked <Oceanus Affairs>. On the regular servers only one of the NPCs will list the belt. Somewhat confusingly, on Gaheris you need to find the NPC that lists the belt and that also happens to be a member of one of the races of your realm. For example, Albion players should find Scholar Shamira, along the left/ southeastern wall of the Hall of Heroes. Talk to her and select Orion's Belt.

She will reply with a little blurb about the history of Orion's Belt. After that give her the "Great Hunt, complete story" from your inventory. Hibernian and Midgard characters go through the same steps, but with Sage Linyive (Hib) or Loremistress Margit (Mid). Once you turn in the Great Hunt, Orion's Belt will appear in your inventory and you are ready to equip it and start leveling it. Congratulations on obtaining your first artifact item! To level it, put it on and it will start gaining XP whenever you kill a mob. It will gain new abilities every few levels, up to level 10.

History Note: This artifact system was added to Dark Age of Camelot when Trials of Atlantis launched in 2001. The idea of an item that gains new abilities as you level it up was pretty novel at the time, and it would be years before any other games used it. The next MMO I am aware of to have a similar system was Lord of the Rings Online, which added legendary items with the Moria expansion in 2008. Much later in 2015 World of Warcraft added artifacts with the Legion expansion, and very recently Dungeons and Dragons Online also added a sentient weapons. However, right here in DAoC was where the idea originated.
A lot of the information currently available on the web is out of date, and I haven't seen all of this information in one place anywhere else. You can find pictures of all the mounts available in game on the official website , though the the information on what champion levels are needed to equip different sets of horse armor is currently wrong. Etaew has a good general guide to horse mechanics that's definitely worth reading.

To use a mount enter "/mount" to open your mount panel, move the horse you want to use from your inventory to the "active" slot of the mount panel, then drag the mount icon from the panel to one of your quickbar slots. There are two general classes of horse:

Standard horses can be used at level ten or higher, grant a 135% runspeed bonus (roughly the same speed as sprinting), can't use saddles or other accessories, and can't be used in the frontiers.

Advanced horses can only be used by characters level 45 or higher, grant a 154% runspeed bonus, can be equipped with saddles, barding and saddlebags, and can be used in the frontiers.

Standard Horses

You get one for free just doing the starter quest series. This mount is also available from a short quest that starts with the Royal Stablemaster in your realm's capital city. Etaew has a good walkthough of this quest. You will also have an opportunity to get a horse with a slightly more interesting realm specific appearance from a quest later on. A quest will give you a choice as to whether or not to desecrate a tomb or relic. If you choose to desecrate it, you can give the item you dig up to the quest giver for one platinum and a nasty debuff that lasts about ten minutes. If you decide to honor the past, instead you'll get a standard horse with a new appearance. This horse can also be sold to merchants for roughly 600 gold when you are done with it.
Advanced Horses

Most of these can't be used until level 50 and require champion levels to use, though the Chestnut horse can be used by characters that are level 45 or higher. The chestnut horse is sold by the Quartermaster's Aide in the Kings Throne Room in your capital city. Generally I wait until I'm level 50 and buy this horse on my way to get the free set of epic gear from the king.

Champion level 1-5 mounts

A wide variety of advanced horses are sold by the Quartermaster in the King's Throne Room. Each has a champion level requirement to use. The quartermaster will only allow you to buy mounts you qualify for. The most exotic and expensive mounts (Epic Mounts) cost 15 p. The quartermaster sells you a voucher that you take to the Royal Stablemaster in your capital city, who can be found in the Stables (they are marked on the in-game city map). With the voucher in your inventory, talk to the stablemaster to start a quest for your advanced mount. The quests vary by realm and the horse you are trying to get. All the ones I've done are pretty straightforward, though sometimes you will need to spend a fair amount to time wandering around an area looking for a specific mob you need kill. Finish the quest to get your new mount. Most Epic mounts can be used by characters of champion level five or higher.

Finally, there are a some horses and Epic mounts (i.e., the gemstone, arboreal, kelpie and clockwork horses) with higher champion level requirements. These horses and vouchers for high level Epic mount quests are sold by Grand Merchant Codius (alb), Grand Merchant Adanor (hib), or Grand Merchant Rogert (mid). This NPC hangs in in the Kings Throne Room in the same room as the king.

Saddles and Horse Armor

Saddles and horse armor are both equipped in the armor slot of your mount panel. They grant an additional 54% runspeed bonus, for a total 208% runspeed bonus. They are only available from player crafters. Generally on the standard servers if you go to the housing area you can find heroic saddles for sale for 1p or less on the housing market. On Gaheris I was very rarely able to find heroic saddles for sale, and resorted to crafting them myself.

All saddles and horse armor provide the exact same runspeed bonus, so if all you care about is function grab a Chestnut Horse and a Heroic Saddle and call it a day. However, there are a wide variety of saddle and armor styles available, the appearance of which varies by realm. You can see pictures of all the Albion horse armors, Hibernian horse armors and Midgard horse armors on the official website.

The levels at which various saddles and armor can be used was changed a few years ago, and for some reason broadsword never bothered to update their website. The current champion level requirements are as follows:

Saddle / Armor Champion
Level Required

Sinister Saddle Champion Level 1

Mystic Medium Armor Champion Level 5

Mystic Heavy Armor Champion Level 7

Between the different styles of armor and all the horses you can choose from, that's a heck of a lot of variety in the look of your mount. It's also worth noting that any armor you have equipped on your horse stays on your horse if you pull it out of the mount panel. To move armor from one horse to another, first pull the armor out of the mount panel and then swap horses.

On Crafting Saddles

To craft saddles and horse armor you need to get metalworking up to at least 1000.* All of the armor and saddle recipes will become available when you do. If you are on Gaheris you can also makes horse armor in the style of any realm you like. To switch to the crafting recipes of a particular realm use the command "/craft albion", "/craft hibernia" or "/craft midgard." One oddity is that different realms use different metals. To make albion and midgard horse armor you'll need arcanium metal bars (sold by merchants in Camelot and Jordenheim), to make hibernian recipes you'll need arcanite metal bars (sold by merchants in Tir na Nog). To get all those saddles to your alts you will also want a house with a vault. I set up a cheap house on Gaheris with a vault along with crafting material merchants and a forge.

Saddle bags provide additional storage. More bags can be used as you rise in champion levels, up to a total of four, which gives you 16 extra storage slots. I have yet to run out of bank space on any of my characters, so I haven't bothered with saddle bags. Barding provides no functional benefits, it's strictly for appearance. However, it can be dyed with cloth dye and comes in a wide variety of styles.
